Adventures In Lacock, Wiltshire: HARRY POTTER STYLE!
It is our Choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
-Albus Dumbledore
J.K Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber Of Secrets.
Probably one of the most world renowned British children literature books of all time is Harry Potter, the 7 book series written by J.K Rowling which has earned her alone 1.15 billion. Harry Potter was then later made into movies staring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. The first four Potter Movies, Philosophers stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban and the fourth one The Goblet of Fire.
They grossed a total of £3.5 billion with a profit of £2.5 billion. Rowling then went on to make a total of 8 movies bringing the golden trio to life. In 2003 she was declared richer than the queen of England with £230 million and was placed 11 places higher than the monarch. The adventures of Harry, Ron and Hermione still live on amongst us to this day.
Of course anyone loves to boast a bit about where they’ve been, ‘oh I don’t know’, somewhere exotic like the Bahamas or even the Sahara desert maybe riding on camels or even London, home to the Big ben, houses of parliament and of course the West End. But No. My family and I had simply driven half an hour to Lacock, Chipenham and I was extremely content there, if you had known why or what place of Lacock specifically it would have made it that bit more, well, bizarre. Would I care to elaborate? Yes, I would.
I am a perfectly normal 12 year old girl who was extremely happy, mesmerised, motivated, etc. basically all the side effects of when you feel happy, happy, is just a word to summarise it all. This girl was extremely happy, why? Because she was in an abbey… Normal may be an understatement. This was not any old abbey it was THE abbey.
Any Harry Potter fans out there? You guys may recognise this as the famous potions master’s classroom Severus Snape, portrayed by Alan Rickman. /* To normal people this may be a stone building or even a room, and then there’s me in the back waving my arms yelling at the top of my voice. “ GUYS, THEY FILMED HARRY POTTER HERE!” Yep, isn’t it amazing? This is the room to the right of the cloisters, (the cloisters are also another set for a scene in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.) Lacock Abbey was used to film part of Hogwarts in the first and second Harry Potter films.
The stone pillars in the picture hold up the nunnery that remained there for 3 centuries until it was sold to Sir William Sharrington, an English courtier during the reign of Henry the 8th it was then converted into a house in the 16 century.
The 2nd scene is Quirrel’s DADA classroom. For muggles (no-maj’s if you’re in America) this subject is non-existent in non-wizarding schools so don’t try telling your muggle/no maj friends about this subject. DADA, stands for defence against the dark arts. ‘You Know Who’ also known as ‘Tom Marvolo Riddle’ or in other words ‘Lord Voldermort’ , jinxed this job in Hogwarts so that the teachers who did manage to get the post could only be held for a year. Some of the most notable DADA professors include, Remus Lupin, Dolores Umbridge, Severus Snape, Gilderoy Lockheart,Quirinus Quirrell and many more.
The Mirror of Erised was also filmed here in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone (the image for this scene is below).
Lacock abbey was used as part of Hogwarts over the first two films, Chamber of Secrets and the Philosophers stone. The picture down below was the filming location where Harry was wandering round the school at night in ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets’.
The third and final scene is of Harry Ron and Hermione walking down the corridor to their lessons in Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone. This was filmed in the cloisters in Lacock Abbey.
